How To Get Better Sleep

Sleep can be a very complex issue and a cause very close to my heart.

It’s one of those things that we often take for granted especially as we grow up.

However most of us have stages when we have broken nights for a hundred and one reasons. If you are woken night after night, sleep loss can become chronic.

Hardly a week goes by without someone requesting help with their sleep. I make up umpteen bottles of Homeobotanical sleep drops and a wonderful homeopathic sleep combo. Usually there is an immediate improvement.

Sleep can be disrupted for umpteen reasons: shock, grief, worries, upsets, shift work, a sluggish liver, digestive issues as well as hot flushes and the moons cycles. All of these ideally need addressing before and alongside any sleep drops or sleep remedies. Its so important to address the cause as well as the symptoms.

Obviously these are only parts of the jigsaw: I always liken sleep to putting up a tent – it needs several different ‘pegs’ to keep the tent up.

Remedies and drops also need to be taken alongside good sleep hygiene routines ie no caffeine, dark chocolate, screens late at night etc.

The draw of looking at devices in the evening is a difficult one but can have a significant impact on our sleep as their blue light disrupts our circadian rhythms and tricks our brain into thinking its morning not night time. 

In addition its also important to get outside in morning light, if possible, as it helps stimulate our pineal glands which produce our sleep hormones which in turn resets our sleep and body clocks.
